Pharmacy Citation Guide (Vancouver Style)

Pharm D, Pharmaceutical Sciences & Pharmacogenomics

Generative AI and Vancouver

This page contains guidance on how to cite output from generative AI tools such as ChatGPT. Here are some general recommendations for working with AI:

  • The use of AI is not appropriate for all academic situations - check your assignment or with your instructor before using generative AI.
  • Whenever you use AI output, you must cite it just as you would any other source. In addition to the citation, some professors may want you to include a copy of the prompt you used and a transcript of your conversation with the AI.
  • You should always take the time to evaluate AI output. Cross-reference what is generated with scholarly sources you know and trust.

Citing AI-Generated Output

The general format for citing AI output is:

Your name. Output requested from: Name of AI tool (Name of developer). Date YYYY Mon DD. Available from: URL

For example:

Mannheim M. Output requested from: ChatGPT (OpenAI). 2024 Jan 15. Available from: https://chat.openai.com/

The author's name is the person who prompted the AI. Usually you. If you are not the person who prompted the AI, include that person's name and affiliation like so:

McCormick M (College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, Western New England University). Output requested from: ChatGPT (OpenAI). 2024 Jan 15. Available from: https://chat.openai.com/

In addition to the citation, you must include a transcript of your conversation with the AI, including the prompt, as an appendix to your paper.

The above citation was adapted from one developed by McMaster University. Please see their Vancouver guide for more detailed information on citing generative AI.
