Finding the Right Database for Micromedex

Example:

Omeprazole. In: Clinical Pharmacology powered by ClinicalKey [database on the Internet]. Tampa (FL): Elsevier; 2018 [updated 2018 Jun 13; cited 2018 Aug 15].

If an author is listed for a monograph in UpToDate, you should include the author's name before the title of the article.

Example:

Wilfong A. Epilepsy syndromes in children. In: UpToDate [database on the Internet]. Waltham (MA): UpToDate, Inc.; 2020 [updated 2020 Feb 10, cited 2020 Aug 15].

However, some articles do not include an author's name.

Example:

Patient information: Ankylosing spondylitis (the basics). In: UpToDate [database on the Internet]. Waltham (MA): UpToDate, Inc.; 2020 [updated 2020 Feb 10, cited 2020 Aug 15].

Each Cochrane Review contains its own ready-made citation. The author names will usually be written out in full, so if you copy and paste, make sure that you make the author name consistent with the Vancouver style rules. Here's the format:

Author(s). Review title. Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews publication year, Issue number, Art. No: articlenumber. DOI: DOInumber.

Example:

Baishnab E, Karner C. Primary care based clinics for asthma. (Protocol) Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2012, Issue 4. Art. No.: CD003533. DOI: 10.1002/14651858.CD003533.pub2.

Example:

St. John's wort. In: Natural Medicines [database on the Internet]. Stockton (CA): Therapeutic Research Center; 2020 [updated 2020 Mar 24, cited 2020 Jul 7].

Package inserts should be cited according to this format:

Drug name [package insert]. Place of publication: Manufacturer; publication year.

Example:

Cialis [package insert]. Indianapolis (IN): Eli Lilly & Co; 2003.

If you find the package insert online, you should indicate this and also include the URL where you found it and the date you cited it.

Example:

Naropin [package insert on the Internet]. Schaumburg (IL): APP Pharmaceuticals, LLC; 2010 [cited 2012 Aug 15]. Available from: http://www.naropin-us.com/pdf/Naropin_PI_451112B_Apr_2010.pdf

Drug Information Databases: General Rules

A drug information database should be cited as follows:

Drug Name. In: Database title [database on the Internet]. Publication city (publication state or country): Publisher. Year(s) of publication [updated year month day; cited year month day].

Not all drug information databases will indicate the date they were last updated; if the update date is not available, omit this but still indicate the date cited (i.e. the day you looked at the article).

In the examples below, we show you how to cite specific databases and tell you the publisher and publication city for most of the databases you'll use.
