Join D'Amour Library in celebrating the freedom to read by participating in a read-out of books that have been targeted for removal or had access restricted. At a read-out, members of the campus community read aloud from or listen to these banned or challenged book excerpts to highlight the value of free and open access to information. This year's theme, chosen by the American Library Association (ALA), is “Censorship Is So 1984.” The theme is particularly relevant this year, since ALA recorded the third highest number of book challenges since tracking began in 1990. The event will be held on Monday, October 6th from 12:00-1:00pm in the Clarke Reading Room. This is intended to be a no-pressure event; we invite participants to take turns reading for as long as they feel comfortable. We will make a selection of books available to attendees who want to read, but who don’t bring a book with them. All students, staff, and faculty are invited to attend. No RSVP is necessary and anyone can drop in as their schedule permits.
Banned Books Week is October 5-October 11!
