D'Amour Seed Library: Start your garden this summer!

Did you know that D'Amour Library launched a Seed Library this semester?

A seed library is a collection of plant seeds (fruits, veggies, herbs, and flowers!) that anyone can take home to use in their home garden! At the end of the growing season, if your plants have “gone to seed”, you can return the seeds to us here in the library for another community member to plant! In this way, we contribute to our community's food systems, preserve local knowledge, and promote sustainability.

How does it work?

The seed library is located on the front wall opposite the information desk. You can open the cabinet and browse for any seeds you like! Take home a maximum of 3 packets per visit, and make sure to write down which seeds you borrowed in the “check-out” binder. You can even borrow tools!

We also have several packets of provider bean seeds generously provided by other Western Massachusetts libraries participating in the Common Seed Project. Inspired by "common read" programs that bring people together through shared reading experiences, the Common Seed project builds community through gardening and seed saving. Participants across western Massachusetts receive free seeds from participating libraries, along with access to local events, workshops, and resources.

This year’s common seed is the “Provider’ Bean”—perfect for gardeners of all levels! Because they are bush-type beans instead of climbing vines, Provider Beans can be grown in small containers and are perfect for home gardeners. Popular ways to eat them include steamed or stir-fried, and also make a great pickle. Grab a seed packet and share your gardening success.

In Massachusetts, mid-May is a great time to plant seeds directly in the ground, because it's usually after the last frost.

Before you leave for the summer, stop by the library and take home a few seeds to plant!
